Vantassel Street Water Main

Newlands Group were contracted by Townsville City Council to construct approximately 700m of DN200 water main to serve as an alternate water supply to the Sun Metal Zinc Refinery in the
event of a failure in the primary supply main. The backup system was designed to ensure continuous water delivery in the event of a failure in the primary supply main and to facilitate scheduled maintenance on the primary line without interrupting the refinery’s water supply.

In addition to this, the installation of the new section of water main allowed for the upgrading of the water services to the Townsville landfill facility. This was another critical element of the project which supplied additional capacity to the facility to enable fire hydrants to deliver the flow and pressures required to meet the minimum standards.

The project involved several significant challenges which included:
• constructing the new water main through areas of rock;
• constant stakeholder management with Council, property owners, business owners, emergency services, etc
• undertaking lane closures to provide a safe work environment for work crews while minimising traffic delays to the landfill facility;
• construction around live services; and
• undertaking live connection works to existing trunk infrastructure.

This project exemplifies our commitment to delivering reliable water infrastructure solutions, safeguarding critical assets and promoting safety in the community.

This project was completed in 4 month time frame.
