TOOWOOMBA WEST SPECIAL SCHOOL

Design and construct new facilities for Toowoomba West Special School

Newlands were contracted to design and construct new facilities for the Toowoomba West Special School. This included the construction of a new administration building, four General Learning Area’s (GLA’s), multiple therapy rooms and the refurbishment the existing administration building to suit visiting therapist, meeting rooms and staff room for the growing school community.

To ensure longevity of the building Fairview Genesis external cladding was used. As this product has a through colour it offers a minimal maintenance for its lifespan. In order to serve the needs to the school community ceiling, hoists were installed in three of the GLAs to enable student movement throughout the rooms. This system is the first of its kind installed in a Queensland Government School. While compliance with the Department of Education’s specifications were key, it was imperative that needs of the students were front of mind. Finding a balance between these two factors proved a challenge, however the end result has created a practical, yet welcoming space to serve the school community.
