New road and bridge for Toowoomba second range crossing project

Newlands was contracted to construct a western local road and bridge as part of the second range crossing project. Our contracted scope of work encompassed a wide range of elements to ensure the road and bridge’s functionality, durability and safety.

For the western road, we executed extensive bulk earthworks including 9,200m3 of stripping and 69,200m3 of cut to fill operations. Ground surface and subgrade treatment were meticulously carried out over an area of 76,500m2. The roads drainage system was engineered to include a cast-in-situ reinforced concrete headwalls, wingwalls and cut-off walls. Additionally, unbound pavements, kerb and channel installations, sprayed bituminous and asphalt surfacing, traffic signals, route lighting, road furniture and landscaping were skillfully implemented.

The bridge component involved various crucial works, including reinforced concrete spread footings totaling 330m3 and 100m3 of reinforced concrete columns. We successfully installed pre-cast pre-stressed concrete deck units, with 24 units measuring 24.6m in length and 34 units measuring 26.4m in length. The cast-in-situ bridge deck, totaling 270m3, was expertly executed along with cast-in-situ edge and median concrete barriers spanning 165m3. Relieving slabs and RSS walls were also meticulously constructed to ensure the bridge’s structural integrity.

This project was completed in a 10-month time frame.
